Homage to Bagpiper Bill Millen

Bagpiper and Commando Bill Millen, better known as Piper Bill, was the personal bagpiper of Simon Fraser, 15th Lord Lovat, Commander of the 1st Special Service Brigade on D-Day.

Millen was the only bagpipe player who played in action during WW2.

I painted the moment of the landing of the commando’s on Sword Beach in Normandy, on 6 June 1944, 07.30 hours.

Some hours later, Millen played the bagpipe on route to the Pegasus Bridge. This action you probably remember watching the movie ‘The Longest Day’.

Bill Millen died on 17 August 2010.

Doedelzakspeler en Commando Bill Millen,beter bekend als Piper Bill, was de persoonlijke doedelzakspeler van Simon Fraser, 15e Lord Lovat, Commandant van de 1st Special Service Brigade op D-Day.

Millen was de enige doedelzakspeler die in actie speelde gedurende WW2.

Ik heb het moment geschilderd van de landing op Sword Beach in Normandië, op 6 juni 1944, 07.30 uur.

Een paar uur later speelde hij op de doedelzak op weg naar de Pegasus Brug. Deze actie herinnert u misschien toen u de film ‘De Langste Dag’ bekeek.

Bill Millen overleed op 17 augustus 2010.
